RECIPIENT OF THE LETTER

Rev. Alois Hoffmann, parish priest of Abenberg

Alois Hoffmann (1837-1910) was born in 1837 in Herrieden, in the Diocese of Eichstätt. In 1865, he was ordained a priest in Eichstätt. From 1884 to 1897, he served as the parish priest in Abenberg. In 1891, on her way back from a trip to America, Mother Frances travelled to Abenberg where she met him and Mayor Schübel. There was a possibility for the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother  to establish a community house by purchasing the old Augustinian Convent in Marienburg, owned by the Town of Abenberg. Two years later, parish priest Hoffmann signed a purchase contract as representative of the sisters. This project was not achieved immediately due to a government decree of the Kingdom of Bavaria in Munich prohibiting the opening of new convents. In 1897, Rev. Hoffmann travelled to Neumarkt where he died in 1910.
