The mission opened on October 30, 1890. Mother Frances, who was in Wichita at the time on her third trip to the United States, gave the official approval on September 21, 1890. It all started with the rental of an old house for the poor in the county, which was later bought and converted into a hospital. The sisters, led by Mother Frances, immediately set to work to make the old building habitable. They cleaned out old beds found in the attic and used straw found in the barn to make rudimentary mattresses. Little by little, the first patients arrived, who generously shared their products with the sisters. Having no heating system of any kind, the sisters fueled the stoves in the rooms with wood taken from the surrounding hillside and transported by cart to the hospital. The chapel was also set up and the trunks the sisters had brought from Wichita were used as cabinets to store the sacred vestments. This house also became a formation center for the sisters of the congregation. Mother Frances, who had arrived with the first sisters at the beginning of October 1890, set aside a room as a classroom. The first months, as is easy to imagine, were hard, marked by sacrifice and renunciation, but the joy of the mission that was blossoming made up for every effort. This was shared
with Mother Frances who remained there until December 9th of the same year. Then, in 1898, following her removal from the position of General Superior, the decision was made to leave St. Mary's Hospital.
