In response to a decree of the Sacred Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith, on March 21, 1960, the first mission in the West Indies in the Caribbean Islands opened on the island of Barbados. On July 12 of the same year, the first sisters arrived and began their work in the Holy Family Convent. On July 14th the first mass was celebrated in the new Holy Family School. On September 22, 1960, the school building was blessed. On December 1, the sisters settled in Villa Maria. On January 25, 1961, the novitiate opened in Ashton, at Villa Maria Covent. On September 11, 1961, the sisters transformed a small house of a former country club into a high school, which closed in April 1976. The Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother were present on the Island until 1986.
